My vote goes to none other than David Glimour.

Honorable mentions include Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton.

Jimmy Motherfuckin' Hendrix. Whether he's *the* best guitarist is debatable, but he was definitely one of the first to pick up an electric guitar and turn it into an art form.

Really, all of the greats are hard to decide from. In addition to Leon's suggestions, I would also add Eddie Van Halen.

Somehow I find your claim to be completely dubious. I dunno, just a feeling in my gut.

Jimmy Page. Hendrix was good, but i doubt he could do all those range of musical styles.

On the basis of pure technical skill, I would have to say Robert Johnson (Standing at the Crossroads Blues).

Hands down, no one can compete with Steve Vai; although Frank Zappa, Les Paul, Roy Clark, Leslie West, Duane Allman (slide), Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, the list could go on and on. These are but a few of my favorites.

All of those people mentioned before are amazing artists. I have a personal soft spot for Joe Perry as well as Billy Gibbons. He was after all Jimi Hendrix's favorite guitarist, that says something. Honorable mention to Randy Rhodes, Slash, Pete Townsend, and B.B. King.
